What 어떻게 지냈어요? / 그동안 means

After beginner greetings, Korean intermediate conversation starts with catching up. 어떻게 지냈어요? asks how someone has been since you last met. 그동안 points at the time in between. Together they replace the English habit of jumping straight to “what’s up.”

With close friends you will hear 어떻게 지냈어? Dropping -요 is casual, not rude — but only after the relationship is already casual.

How to form it

  • Polite: 어떻게 지냈어요? / 잘 지냈어요?
  • Casual: 어떻게 지냈어? / 잘 지냈어?
  • Add 그동안 for “in the meantime”: 그동안 잘 지냈어요?
  • A safe reply: 네, 잘 지냈어요. 바쁘긴 했어요.

When to use it

  • You meet a classmate, coworker, or neighbor after a gap of days or months.
  • You open a voice note or text after radio silence — 그동안 잘 지냈어요? is gentler than 왜 연락 안 했어?
  • You want Korean intermediate small talk before asking a favor.

Common mistakes

These are the traps English speakers hit when they translate word-for-word. Fix the pattern, not just the vocabulary.

Watch-out

❌ 안녕하세요? What’s up?
✅ 안녕하세요. 그동안 어떻게 지냈어요?

안녕하세요 already did the hello. Add catching-up language instead of English “what’s up.”

Watch-out

❌ 어떻게 했어요?
✅ 어떻게 지냈어요?

했어요 asks what they did. 지냈어요 asks how life has been.

Watch-out

❌ 잘 지내요? to someone you have not seen in a year
✅ 그동안 잘 지냈어요?

Present 지내요 is for “these days.” Past 지냈어요 fits a gap.

Mini dialogue

Two classmates meet after summer break.

A민수 씨, 오래간만이에요. 그동안 어떻게 지냈어요?minsu ssi, oraeganmanieyo. geudongan eotteoke jinaesseoyo?Minsu, long time no see. How have you been?
B잘 지냈어요. 여행도 갔다 오고, 일도 좀 했어요.jal jinaesseoyo. yeohaengdo gatda ogo, ildo jom haesseoyo.I’ve been well. I traveled a bit and also worked.
A다행이네요. 커피 한잔 할래요?dahaeng-ineyo. keopi hanjan hallae yo?That’s good. Want to grab a coffee?

Don’t mix these up

잘 지내요? is “are you doing well these days.” 잘 지냈어요? is “have you been well since last time.” If the gap is long, add 그동안 or 오래간만이에요 first.

Korean intermediate catching up: quick answers

Is 밥 먹었어요? really a greeting?

Yes, among people who already know each other. It is care, not a food survey. For someone you have not seen in months, 어떻게 지냈어요? is clearer.

Can I use this in a work email?

In speech, yes. In email, 그간 안녕하셨는지요 is more formal. For most chats, 잘 지냈어요? is enough.
