Korean has speech levels. You don’t need all of them on day one. Learn polite -요 first. Use it with anyone you don’t know well.

Polite · default
안녕하세요

Hello (polite)
Casual · close friends

Rule of thumb Shop, café, subway, first meeting, older person → use -요. Wait until a Korean friend invites you to speak casually.

Practice this in Lesson L1-03 Greetings, then record it on the Practice page.

은/는 marks the topic: “as for this…”. 이/가 marks the subject: who or what actually does the action. English doesn’t need either, so skip the tables at first.

Topic · 은/는
저는 학생이에요
jeoneun haksaeng-ieyo
As for me, I’m a student.
Subject · 이/가
누가 왔어요?
nuga wasseoyo?
Who came?
How to pick Use 은/는 after 저 (I) in introductions. Use 이/가 when you ask “who/what?” or point out new information. 은/는 after a vowel-final word: 는. After a consonant: 은. Same split for 가 / 이.

Stick -았- or -었- into the verb, then add -요. Don’t start with a full table. Learn a handful of high-frequency past forms and reuse them.

하다 → 했어요
공부했어요
gongbuhaesseoyo
I studied.
가다 → 갔어요
학교에 갔어요
hakgyoe gasseoyo
I went to school.
먹다 → 먹었어요
밥 먹었어요
bap meogeosseoyo
I ate (a meal).
보다 → 봤어요
영화 봤어요
yeonghwa bwasseoyo
I watched a movie.
Shortcut If the last vowel is ㅏ or ㅗ, you’ll often hear -았- (갔어요). Otherwise -었- (먹었어요). 하다 is irregular: 했어요.

Many polite questions are just a statement with a rising tone. You don’t always need a special ending. Add -까요 when you want to suggest or wonder together.

Rising tone
학생이에요?
haksaeng-ieyo?
Are you a student?
Where
화장실 어디예요?
hwajangsil eodiyeyo?
Where is the bathroom?
Shall we · -까요
같이 갈까요?
gachi galkkayo?
Shall we go together?
Soft wonder · -나요
아직 열려 있나요?
ajik yeollyeo innayo?
Is it still open? (softer)
Beginner default Statement + ? is enough. Save -까요 for suggestions. You don’t need -나요 until later.

A batchim is a consonant parked at the bottom of a syllable block. English speakers often skip it, so 밥 (bap, rice) starts to sound like 바 (ba).

ㅂ batchim · p-like stop
bap
rice / a meal
ㄴ batchim · n
san
mountain
ㅇ batchim · ng
gang
river
Watch-out
ot
clothes — ㅅ at the end often sounds like t
English-speaker trap Don’t add a vowel after the final consonant. 밥 is bap, not bap-eu. Practice with Hangul Day 6, then the vowel-matching drill on Practice.

English hears two sounds (g / k). Korean often works as a three-way contrast: plain, aspirated (extra puff of air), and tense (tight, no puff).

Plain ㄱ
gal
will go — lighter, less air
Aspirated ㅋ
kal
knife — extra puff of air
Tense ㄲ
kkal
tight / tensed — no extra air
How to feel it Hold a tissue in front of your mouth. ㅋ should move it. ㄲ should not. Same pattern for ㄷ/ㅌ/ㄸ and ㅂ/ㅍ/ㅃ.

Tense consonants are written as doubles. Your throat and tongue tighten. There is almost no puff of air. English doesn’t have this, so “louder” is the wrong fix.

Plain ㅅ
sal
flesh / to live
Tense ㅆ
ssal
uncooked rice
Plain ㄷ
dal
moon
Tense ㄸ
ttal
daughter
Practice tip Record yourself on the Practice page, then play the native audio. Listen for tightness, not volume. Hangul Day 5 covers the full set.

Korean often uses a title instead of a given name. Age and workplace rank decide this more than English-style first-name culture. Using someone’s name too soon can feel too close.

Older male (said by women)
오빠
oppa
older brother / close older man
Older female (said by women)
언니
eonni
older sister / close older woman
Older male (said by men)
hyeong
older brother / close older man
School / work senior
선배
seonbae
senior (school or workplace)
Safe default Use 씨 after a name (민수 씨) or a job title until someone offers a closer title. Don’t copy K-drama 오빠 with strangers.
