  • Bucket-list and travel interviews.
  • Softening a future attempt: 해 볼게요 (I’ll give it a shot).

Common mistakes

These are the traps English speakers hit when they translate word-for-word. Fix the pattern, not just the vocabulary.

Watch-out

❌ 본 적 봐요
✅ 본 적 있어요 / 해 봤어요

적 pairs with 있다/없다. 보다 is the try verb.

Watch-out

❌ 먹어 보다 when you eat every day
✅ 먹어요

보다 adds experimental flavor. Daily rice is not 먹어 봐요.

Watch-out

❌ 가 봤어요 vs 갔어요
✅ 가 봤어요 emphasizes the experience of having gone

Both can be true. 가 봤어요 answers “ever.”

Mini dialogue

Read it twice. Second time, cover the English.

A불고기 먹어 본 적 있어요?bulgogi meogeo bon jeok isseoyo?Have you tried bulgogi?
B네, 서울에서 먹어 봤어요. 다음에 갈비도 먹어 보고 싶어요.ne, seoureseo meogeo bwasseoyo. daeume galbido meogeo bogo sipeoyo.Yes, in Seoul. Next I want to try galbi too.
A그럼 제가 맛있는 집 알려 줄게요.geureom jega masinneun jip allyeo julgeyo. Then I’ll tell you a good place.

Don’t mix these up

고 싶다 is want. 어 보고 싶다 is want to try. 본 적 있다 is have you ever, which is not the same as 하고 있어요 (currently doing).
