If you are studying Korean obligation, this lesson is the one to keep. You will learn how -아야/어야 하다 works in real conversation, when to use it, and the mistakes English speakers make first. This is a Korean intermediate grammar guide with examples, romanization, and a five-minute speaking drill.
By the end you should be able to hear -아야/어야 하다 in dramas and K-talk, then reuse it in your own sentences. Read once. Say the examples out loud. Then drill the same lines on Practice.
What -아야/어야 하다 means
-아야/어야 하다 is the core Korean obligation pattern: you have to. 약을 먹어야 해요. -아야겠다 is the self-nudge: I should probably… Intermediate learners need both so they don’t sound like a rulebook in every chat.
How to form it
- Stem + -아야/어야 하다 (가야 해요, 먹어야 해요, 해야 해요)
- 되다 variant: 해야 돼요 — same meaning, very spoken
- Self-talk: -아야겠다 / -아야겠네요
- Negative obligation: 하면 안 되다 (must not), 안 해도 되다 (don’t have to)

Use these Korean obligation example sentences as a speaking list. Korean first, then pronunciation, then English.

Common mistakes
These are the traps English speakers hit when they translate word-for-word. Fix the pattern, not just the vocabulary.
Watch-out
❌ 해야 하다 for “don’t have to”
✅ 안 해도 되다
해야 하다 is must. The opposite is 안 해도 되다, not 안 해야 하다 (must not do).
Watch-out
❌ 가야 해요 to a friend about their hobby
✅ 가면 좋겠어요 / 가 봐
Obligation at a friend can sound pushy.
Watch-out
❌ 아야겠다 to a boss about their job
✅ 시는 honorific + 하셔야 할 것 같습니다
아야겠다 is often self-directed.
Mini dialogue
Read it twice. Second time, cover the English.
| Speaker | Korean | Pronunciation | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 발표 자료 다 만들었어요? | balpyo jaryo da mandeureosseoyo? | Did you finish the slides? |
| B | 아직요. 오늘 밤에 끝내야 해요. | ajikyo. oneul bame kkeunnaeya haeyo. | Not yet. I have to finish them tonight. |
| A | 그럼 커피 줄까요? 졸리면 안 되잖아요. | geureom keopi julkkayo? jollimyeon an doejanhayo. | Want coffee? You can’t get sleepy, right? |
Don’t mix these up
으면 안 되다 = prohibited. 안 해도 되다 = optional. 아야 하다 = required. Three boxes. Don’t mash them.
