This is a Korean intermediate grammar guide with examples, romanization, and a five-minute speaking drill.

What -(으)려면 means

-(으)려면 means “if you intend to / if you want to.” The second clause is usually a requirement: 환불하려면 영수증이 필요해요. English speakers overuse 싶으면. 으려면 sounds like a procedure, not a craving.

How to form it

  • Verb stem + -(으)려면
  • 갈려면 is a spoken shortcut of 가려면; write 가려면
  • Often followed by 해야 하다, 필요하다, 미리, 먼저
  • Politeness sits on the second clause, not on 으려면
