Common mistakes
These are the traps English speakers hit when they translate word-for-word. Fix the pattern, not just the vocabulary.
Watch-out
❌ 가기 위해서 해요 when 가려고 해요 is enough
✅ Use 려고 for everyday intention
기 위해서 is heavier. 커피 마시려고 나왔어요 is more natural than 마시기 위해서.
Watch-out
❌ 위해서 하다 with no 기 on verbs
✅ 배우기 위해서, not 배우 위해서
Nouns take 을 위해서. Verbs take 기 위해서.
Watch-out
❌ Mixing 위해서 and 때문에
✅ 위해서 = purpose, 때문에 = cause
비가 오기 때문에 집에 있어요 is a cause, not a goal.
Mini dialogue
Read it twice. Second time, cover the English.
| Speaker | Korean | Pronunciation | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 왜 이렇게 일찍 일어났어요? | wae ireoke iljjik ireonasseoyo? | Why did you get up so early? |
| B | 운동하기 위해서요. 아침에만 시간이 돼요. | undonghagi wihaeseoyio. achimeman sigani dwaeyo. | To work out. Morning is the only time that works. |
| A | 대단하네요. 저도 건강을 위해 따라 해 볼게요. | daedanhaneyo. jeodo geongangeul wihae ttara hae bolgeyo. | That’s impressive. I’ll try it for my health too. |
Don’t mix these up
으려고 is spoken intention. 도록 can mean “so that.” 기 위해서 is the textbook purpose phrase and the one writing tests love.
