If you are studying Korean grammar dorok, this lesson is the one to keep. You will learn how -도록 works in real conversation, when to use it, and the mistakes English speakers make first. This is a Korean intermediate grammar guide with examples, romanization, and a five-minute speaking drill.
By the end you should be able to hear -도록 in dramas and K-talk, then reuse it in your own sentences. Read once. Say the examples out loud. Then drill the same lines on Practice.
What -도록 means
-도록 has three jobs learners meet together: so that a result happens, until a limit, and “make sure you…” in instructions. 오늘은 일찍 들어가도록 하세요 is a manager-friendly “please head in early.”
How to form it
- Verb stem + -도록
- Purpose/result: 이해할 수 있도록 쉽게 말해요
- Instruction: 늦지 않도록 하세요 / 들어가도록 하세요
- Extent: 밤새도록, 눈이 빠지도록

Common mistakes
These are the traps English speakers hit when they translate word-for-word. Fix the pattern, not just the vocabulary.
Watch-out
❌ 도록 하다 vs 게 하다
✅ 도록 하세요 is an instruction to the listener; 게 하다 is causative
들어가도록 하세요 = please go in. 들어가게 했어요 = I made them go in.
Watch-out
❌ Using 도록 for simple because
✅ Use 어서 / 니까
도록 is not a because-ending.
Watch-out
❌ 도록요 as a full casual answer
✅ Add a verb
일찍 가도록요 is incomplete. 일찍 가도록 할게요.
Mini dialogue
Read it twice. Second time, cover the English.
| Speaker | Korean | Pronunciation | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 내일 발표 준비는 다 됐어요? | naeil balpyo junbineun da dwaesseoyo? | Is tomorrow’s presentation ready? |
| B | 거의요. 자료는 제가 고치도록 할게요. | geoiyo. jaryoneun jega gochidok halgeyo. | Almost. I’ll make sure to fix the slides. |
| A | 좋아요. 너무 길지 않도록만 해 주세요. | joayo. neomu gilji antongman hae juseyo. | Good. Just keep it from running too long. |
Don’t mix these up
게 is a lighter “so that / -ly.” 도록 is stronger and more instructional. 쉽게 말해요 vs 이해할 수 있도록 말해요.
