Common mistakes

These are the traps English speakers hit when they translate word-for-word. Fix the pattern, not just the vocabulary.

Watch-out

❌ Using 더라고요 for something you only heard
✅ Use 다고 해요 / 다던데요

더라고요 claims you perceived it. Don’t use it for pure gossip.

Watch-out

❌ 더라고요요
✅ 더라고요

요 is already inside 더라고요.

Watch-out

❌ Using it about your own unobserved inner fact
✅ It works for your felt experience, not trivia you didn’t experience

저는 학생이에요 not 학생이더라고요 unless you just realized it.

Mini dialogue

Read it twice. Second time, cover the English.

SpeakerKoreanPronunciationEnglish

B네. 초반은 느린데 중반부터 재미있더라고요.ne. chobaneun neurinde jungbanbuteo jaemiitdeoragoyo.Yes. It’s slow at first, but from the middle I found it fun.
A그럼 이번 주에 밀어 볼게요.geureom ibeon jue mireo bolgeyo. Then I’ll push through it this week.

Don’t mix these up

네요 is an in-the-moment reaction. 더라고요 is a later retelling of that noticing. 맵네요 (now) vs 맵더라고요 (I’m telling you later).
