Korean Grammar -아/어지다: How Things Change

If you are studying Korean grammar ajida, this lesson is the one to keep. You will learn how -아/어지다 works in real conversation, when to use it, and the mistakes English speakers make first. This is a Korean intermediate grammar guide with examples, romanization, and a five-minute speaking drill.

By the end you should be able to hear -아/어지다 in dramas and K-talk, then reuse it in your own sentences. Read once. Say the examples out loud. Then drill the same lines on Practice.

What -아/어지다 means

-아/어지다 turns an adjective into a change. 춥다 is “is cold.” 추워지다 is “gets cold.” Intermediate Korean needs this for weather, feelings, and “I’m getting better at…”.

비가 오면 오히려 기분이 좋아지는데요 is a useful model: condition + unexpected change.

How to form it

  • Adjective stem + -아/어지다 (추워지다, 더워지다, 좋아지다)
  • 하다 adjectives: 피곤해지다
  • Some verbs already mean change: 늘다, 줄다 — don’t force 지다
  • Passive 지다 on verbs (열어지다) is a different, more advanced use

Common mistakes

These are the traps English speakers hit when they translate word-for-word. Fix the pattern, not just the vocabulary.

Watch-out

❌ 추워요졌어요
✅ 추워졌어요

Attach 지다 to the 아/어 form, then conjugate 지다.

Watch-out

❌ 한국어를 좋아져요
✅ 한국어가 쉬워졌어요 / 실력이 늘었어요

The thing that changes is usually the subject with 이/가.

Watch-out

❌ Using 되다 everywhere
✅ 되다 is become a noun/role; 지다 is become an adjective state

의사가 됐어요 vs 바빠졌어요.

Mini dialogue

Read it twice. Second time, cover the English.

SpeakerKoreanPronunciationEnglish

B아침엔 괜찮았는데 갑자기 추워졌어요.achimen gwaenchananneunde gapjagi chuwojyeosseoyo. It was fine this morning, then it suddenly got cold.
A그러게요. 저는 이런 날 오히려 집중이 잘 돼요.geureogeyo. jeoneun ireon nal ohiryeo jipjungi jal dwaeyo.True. On days like this I actually focus better.

Don’t mix these up

게 되다 is “end up doing.” 아/어지다 is “become [adjective].” 알게 됐어요 vs 똑똑해졌어요.
