This is a Korean intermediate grammar guide with examples, romanization, and a five-minute speaking drill.

By the end you should be able to hear -아서/어서 in dramas and K-talk, then reuse it in your own sentences. Read once. Say the examples out loud. Then drill the same lines on Practice.

What -아서/어서 means

-아서/어서 connects two clauses as reason or sequence. 배가 고파서 먹었어요 (because). 가게에 가서 샀어요 (and then). Beginners meet it as “because.” Intermediate learners must split the two jobs.

How to form it

  • Last vowel ㅏ/ㅗ → -아서 (가서, 와서, 만나서)
  • Otherwise → -어서 (먹어서, 읽어서, 바빠서)
  • 하다 → 해서
  • Do not add 았/었 on the first clause: 갔어서 is wrong

When to use it

  • Everyday because, especially feelings and states.
  • Natural sequences: go and buy, sit and eat.
  • Not for commands or suggestions in the second clause — switch to 니까.

Common mistakes

These are the traps English speakers hit when they translate word-for-word. Fix the pattern, not just the vocabulary.

Watch-out

❌ 갔어서 먹었어요
✅ 가서 먹었어요

Tense lives on the last verb. The 아서/어서 clause stays tenseless.

Watch-out

❌ 바빠서 가세요
✅ 바쁘니까 내일 오세요

아서/어서 + command/suggestion sounds off. Use 니까.

Watch-out

❌ Using 어서 for a long logical essay
✅ 니까 / 기 때문에 for argument

어서 is spoken and experiential. Formal cause likes 기 때문에.

Mini dialogue

Read it twice. Second time, cover the English.

SpeakerKoreanPronunciationEnglish
A왜 안 왔어요?wae an wasseoyo?Why didn’t you come?
B길이 막혀서 중간에 돌아갔어요.giri makhyeoseo junggane doragasseoyo.Traffic was jammed, so I turned back halfway.
A고생했네요. 다음에는 지하철 타요.gosaenghaenneyo. daeume-neun jihacheol tayo. That’s rough. Take the subway next time.

Don’t mix these up

니까 can take tense and pairs with suggestions. 아서/어서 cannot take tense and prefers statements. 기 때문에 is heavier/formal.
