What -(으)ㄴ/는 모양이다 means

모양이다 guesses from clues. 두 사람이 많이 부러운 모양이에요: it seems those two are something to envy — judging by what we see. It is more evidence-based than 것 같다 and more observational than 을 텐데.

How to form it

  • Present action: -는 모양이다 → 가는 모양이에요
  • Past / adjective: -(으)ㄴ 모양이다 → 간 모양, 바쁜 모양
  • Future: -(으)ㄹ 모양이다 → 비가 올 모양이에요
  • Noun: 인가 봐요 is often more natural than 인 모양이다 in speech

Common mistakes

These are the traps English speakers hit when they translate word-for-word. Fix the pattern, not just the vocabulary.

Watch-out

❌ 모양이다 with no clue
✅ 것 같다 / 을 수도 있다

모양 wants evidence. A random vibe is 것 같다.

Watch-out

❌ 는 모양이다 on past adjectives
✅ 예쁜 모양, 바쁜 모양

Adjectives take ㄴ, not 는.

Watch-out

❌ Using it about yourself often
✅ Usually about others or the weather

내가 아픈 모양이에요 is odd unless you’re joking.

Mini dialogue

Read it twice. Second time, cover the English.

나 봐요 is spoken and light. 것 같다 is the all-purpose maybe. 모양이다 is written-friendly and clue-based. 을 텐데 is empathy-guess.
