If you are studying Korean grammar eotdeoni, this lesson is the one to keep. You will learn how -었더니 works in real conversation, when to use it, and the mistakes English speakers make first. This is a Korean advanced grammar guide with examples, romanization, and a five-minute speaking drill.
By the end you should be able to hear -었더니 in dramas and K-talk, then reuse it in your own sentences. Read once. Say the examples out loud. Then drill the same lines on Practice.
What -었더니 means
-았/었더니 connects your past action to a result you then noticed. 떡국을 한 그릇 다 먹었더니 배가 불러요: I finished a bowl of tteokguk, and now I’m full. The speaker did the first action. The second clause is the discovery.
How to form it
- Speaker’s action in past: -았/었더니
- Second clause = result, new info, or surprise
- Not for third-person first clauses as easily — keep it “I did X, then (I found) Y”
- 더니 without 았/었 is a different, trickier pattern

Common mistakes
These are the traps English speakers hit when they translate word-for-word. Fix the pattern, not just the vocabulary.
Watch-out
❌ Third person 했더니 casually
✅ Keep first person for this lesson
민수가 갔더니 is a different advanced 더니 use. Don’t mix yet.
Watch-out
❌ 더니 vs 었더니
✅ 었더니 = after I did. 더니 can contrast then-vs-now
예전에는 친절하더니 지금은… is the other 더니.
Watch-out
❌ 었더니 + command
✅ Use 니까
Like 어서, this pair prefers statements.
Mini dialogue
Read it twice. Second time, cover the English.
| Speaker | Korean | Pronunciation | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 얼굴이 좋아 보여요. | eolguri joa boyeoyo. | Your face looks better. |
| B | 어제 일찍 잤더니 피곤이 좀 풀렸어요. | eoje iljjik jatdeoni pigoni jom pullyeosseoyo. | I slept early yesterday, and the tiredness eased. |
| A | 저도 오늘 그렇게 해 봐야겠어요. | jeodo oneul geureoke hae bwayagesseoyo. | I should try that today too. |
Don’t mix these up
어서 is because/sequence. 었더니 adds “and then I noticed the result.” 니까 is reason, including for suggestions.
